Defining Development Metrics

[Under development]

Differentiate between leading (behavioral) and trailing (outcome-based) metrics.

Outcome-Based Metrics

For each capability, identify the “one metric that matters” at the current time - the one that is constraining you from achieving the capability.

An important one to consider:

  • Product quality (or production incident rate).

Behavioral Metrics

They reflect your current theory about which behaviors will improve outcomes. As such, they are Bayesian - they are a hypothesis.

An important one to consider:

  • Feature lead time.

  • Deployment or release failure rate (causing rollback, hotfix, or recall).

  • Percent time spent on manual activity that could be automated.
